Bench Rest Shooting

Saturday, August 1, 2020

Saturday, August 1st, Snake River Sportsmen hosted a 100 yard group bench rest match, with 11 competitors joining in the fun. The day started with perfect calm. As soon as the first wind flag went up, conditions got way more challenging. We had gentle, switchy winds for the rest of the morning leading to several 4 &1 groups (4 bullets in a tiny group with one bullet to the side). Small group of the day was Larry Bryant with a .177 followed by Richard Allen with a .209. Match winner was Kerry Kegel with a .3048 aggregate.

In September, Snake River Sportsmen will be joining with Homedale Rod & Gun Club to host a two day varmint for score event. Saturday, September 5th, we will shoot a 200 yard match in the morning and a 100 yard matches in the afternoon at the Vale range. Sunday, September 6th, Homedale Rod & Gun will host a 100 yard morning match followed by a 200 yard match in the afternoon. The winner of the four match aggregate will be crowned the Oregon Trail Classic Champion. If you are interested in participating in either or both events, please contact Kerry Kegel at 208-230-9282 or Gary VanLier at 208-965-1992. You are welcome to shoot all or any portion of the two day event. Hope to see you there.

This was our first bench rest match of the 2020 season. We shot varmint for score at 100 yards. It was fun to blow the rust out of our barrels and even though the early morning fog had us guessing at our first group of targets, it turned into a nice day for a match. A little breeze came up to clear the fog away and visibility was excellent, but the air movement made for some trickier conditions. Even so, there were some good scores shot. High score for the day was shot by Kerry Kegel with a 250-17x followed closely by Chuck Stiles with a 250-13x. Gary VanLier and Richard Allen also shot 250’s with 10x and 8x respectively. Dave Brown, Robert Gibbens and Tim Ventrees each had a couple shots leak out of the 10 ring, but still managed to shoot lots of x’s.

Our next match will be March 7th. We would love to have more shooters, so bring your most accurate rifle and join in the fun.

Respectfully submitted,

Kerry Kegel

The first bench rest match for the year.  It was COLD, but at least it was windy!  Group size confirmed that none of us had shot much bench rest in the last couple months and the conditions were pretty tough...several 4 and 1 groups and lots of groups that were much wider than they were tall.  Kerry Kegel was able to print a .282 for small group and he held on to win the match.  New shooter, Bob Batcheller brought his A game and finished in 2nd place.

Snake River Sportsmen held the final bench rest match for the 2017 season.  It was a very successful year where new and veteran shooters brought their most accurate rifles and best loads to the range to compete.  We continue to invite anyone who has an interest in rifle accuracy to come join us as we begin the 2018 season.  If you have any desire to put 5 bullets in the smallest hole possible, come to a match and see how it’s done.

Cold weather was a factor in our final match of the year and attendance was down.  Dave Brown brought his A game and managed to win the match.  Good shooting, Dave!!

Weather permitting, we will start the 2018 season with a 100 yard score match on January 6th.  Come join in the fun.

1st - Dave Brown  .2440
2nd - Kerry Kegel  .2828
Small Group - Kerry Kegel  .178
